And I’ll treat myself to yummy icecream!:D
Hmm good question. I’ve seen a lot of differing views so I’ll tell you how I thought about it and you can agree or disagree.
Many people say to get a cheap off-brand stethoscope for school because you might displace it or lose it at clinicals.
I say, get the best one you can afford. You are going to be a student that is hearing different heart sounds for the first time. You want the best sound quality possible so you can start picking up on the different heart and lung sounds. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to go back and listen to heart sounds again in order to hear any kind of difference. I can’t imagine having a crappy stethoscope where I could barely hear S1 and S2 at all. However, you probably do not need a cardiologist level stethoscope, those are ridiculously expensive and really meant for cardiologist and cardio nurses who need ridiculously fine detail.
I have the Littmann Classic II SE. It is a nice sturdy stethoscope. It lets me hear fine sounds and it has a bell and diaphragm that you can go between for lower/higher sounds. I also got it engraved so that if I ever did lose it, people would know who to save it for or who to return it to. On stethoscope.com it’s just an extra $13 (really not a paid advertisement, just telling you what I did). It’s a great stethoscope and I highly recommend it. If you do go off-brand, get the best one you can afford and plan on keeping it for the entirety of your nursing school career and hopefully beyond. I make sure it’s around my neck at the beginning and end of every shift.
Hope this helps! If you want any more info, message me again.
Cheapest models are better for students, makes you train your ear, so when you shift to a more sophisticated one you’ll hear even more things. Just an idea.
